Usbloader & Nintendont
5 messages normal
Hello/Bonjour
For those who don't know, usbloader is a homebrew that can launch wii and gamecube games from a hard drive, usb key or sd card, and nintendont is the same thing but only for gamecube games.
Some of my physical games are dying and for example, I play wii party on usbloader since with the original disk the game just crash randomly (maybe some of my very recent record for this game was made on usbloader). My question is : Is it allowed on VGR ? Because we can use it to play a game we already own, or a game we don't own... What do you think about it ?
Hello,
To put it simply, if it's Nintendont it's also VGR-don't 😁
As stated in the rules,
2.2 Prohibited practices
All of the following are prohibited:
|
The reason is basic, if you play a game using a ROM, any ROM, you do not know how the ROM may have been modified. The game might be faster, the game may be slower, the score might glitched without you noticing it, some items might be missing,... Anything can happen. For example: in Mario Kart 64's Luigi's Raceway, emulators struggle to render the giant screen above the tunnel. Who knows if by not loading the data you do not win a few tenth of a second ? It might not look like it's a big deal but at top level on some games, world records are even closer than that.
And even if the ROM you're using is somewhat a picture perfect copy-carbon code to the original, there is no way you can be sure the emulator you function is on the same operating level as the original support.
And more importantly, there is no way we can check the validity of those scores.
All of these (and more) is why VGR prohibits the use of such emulators, it would simply break the fair competition between all players. Which makes sense because you're basically playing a clone game on another console of one's given game.
For your disk's issue, this might be the optical drive of your wii that is just given up. Have you tried your CD on another console ? You could also try to clean them but I'd recommend using a specific machine for that. Some vendors might be okay to do it for free or a few bucks.
Good luck !
"To put it simply, if it's Nintendont it's also VGR-don't 😁"
If this is against the rule I will not post any record made with nintendont
"The reason is basic, if you play a game using a ROM, any ROM, you do not know how the ROM may have been modified. The game might be faster, the game may be slower, the score might glitched without you noticing it, some items might be missing,... Anything can happen"
I can hack my console, use cheat code with an action replay for example. I can make these modification, proof that I own the console and the game without speaking about what I've done before. Plus, if my wii or my game is so old that sometimes the game is glitching "by itself" you can't check that if I don't tell you. That's why for me, this sentence "And more importantly, there is no way we can check the validity of those scores.[on emulator/ROM]" doesn't apply only on ROM but also on physical game with legit consoles, separate console and ROM can be a solution to get a fair competition but, as I said previously, if this is against the rule I will not post any record made with nintendont
"For your disk's issue, this might be the optical drive of your wii that is just given up."
That's specific on some of my game. Maybe my wii is dying too but I'm sure that my wii party'cd is broken.
Also, I don't have a clear answer about USBloader even if I'm 99% sure that it is not allowed, so it means that I can't post record on games that I own but can't fully use ?
I assure you it is against the rules to use such emulators. I know it's frustrating for your situation but VGR can't and won't accept such practice. Note that we are slowly more and more improving our proofs control but we still require good faith from the participants. I'd like to simply remind you that we are not paid to do all that and we are all firstly players, and we all have been there. If your disk is really broken and not replaceable maybe you could borrow one copy from a friend ? Or maybe even a VGR friend if you know one not too far away ?
Like I said we chose fair competition between players rather than sheer numbers of those (although we wouldn't mind more people to join in our favorite games), some other places decided otherwise.
Ultimately, like in any sports of hobbies, if you want to cheat and break the rules, you can and you will. So you are correct we are limited to the extend we can check the validity of your posts. And in the end it's still up to you and your conscience to determinate if you are okay living knowing you are cheating yourself on this perticular website where people see you as a fellow player, a peer amongst those who choose to push the virtual limits and a valuable concurrent to some beloved titles. Because I also assure you that , we are not that many to try record on more obscure and less played and who knows how long it will take for someone to challenge our position in the same way we challenged it.
Personally, VGR is a special place, the last bastion standing in front of an era all-screaming the word "emulator, emulator,..." like if it was the all-solution of the problems of the videogames world. A place of a tradition, to compete friendly with other players in order to prove we can beat the game, and grave 3 gold characters on a finish screen. As if the whole internet was only one big arcade machine where we all gather to play.
Please understand that I only state my view on the topic, but we are asked that question all the time so maybe this will make it clearer for futures references.
And for a clear answer: yes, USBloader is like Nintendont, an unofficial emulator which is against the rules and against the law and as such, not accepted on VGR.
