Edited the main post. The game was a remake of the Genesis/Megadrive game. It has the same stuff as the Genesis/Megadrive game.

Don't use both modes as records. There is no way to prove which one you are on. Just keep it the same to the megadrive/genesis.

For Score Total category, is it not one record like in the original game? It doesn't really make sense to have the total score for every level (and I don't think I ever saw in it VGR)

It's kinda hard to explain... The game continues scores after each level and can be carried all the way to the end. Watch a run of the game and you'll see.
