I noted some scores are much higher than what's possible, and the reason is VGR lacks some rules for this series compared to other sites and score rankings where default settings is the standard. To remedy this here are the modifications:
-For the standalone games (Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, Metal Slug X) on the platforms Neo Geo/Wii/PlayStation/PlayStation 2/Xbox, the rules must be: 3 Heroes - Normal Difficulty.
-For Anthology on the platforms Wii/PlayStation Portable, the rules must be: Normal Difficulty - Limited Continues - New Game.
-For Anthology on the platform PlayStation 2, the rules must be: Normal Difficulty - 20 Continues.

But this is not how the high scores have been established from 20 years ago to present. If you take advantage of settings to beat a WR then it's not legitimate. For example a player cannot beat a record with default settings because he doesn't know the patterns, so he will change the settings for higher difficulty and more lives to beat the record, it's an easy way to get a high score. Higher difficulty means more resistance from ennemies=more points, it doesn't mean this player is better because if the WR used higher settings of course the score would be higher.

For example at TG look at the rules for Anthology: https://www.twingalaxies.com/game/metal-slug-anthology/nintendo-wii/page/1/ it says "Difficulty must be set at normal. This is a 1 Player ONLY Variation! Autofire is optional! Continues are NOT allowed! "
And for Metal Slug on Wii VC: https://www.twingalaxies.com/game/metal-slug/nintendo-wii-virtual-console/ it says: "Single Player Only, Level Normal, Hero 3 [No Continues Allowed!]
Special Rules: None "
So not only the difficulty is set to default but also the number of lives, which means a score played on Hard difficulty and with 5 lives would be rejected.

There are many games with separate ranking for each difficulty, including this one. Look at the PC, DS and PSP (XX) version they all have separate difficulty and the number of lives is also fixed to 3. The reason is you cannot compare scores obtained with different difficulty or different number of lives that's why you need fixed settings for the Neo Geo version and Anthology.

Can the score be proven with a simple picture proof, where you can see the highscore and the settings used?
If so then VGR would allow these extra charts to exist on this site.
If you would need Video Proof for those, then it is commonly rejected. This site is based on an Honor system where no one is required to upload proof for any one score unless it is deemed suspicious by any member of this community, which then they can ask for proof (by clicking the grey square next to the record in question).
VGR prefers to add only records that can be proven easily with picture proof in the case where someone asks for proof. Requiring Video Proof is just not what VGR wants. It isn't impossible to have those types of charts here, but the default charts are always those that can be proven with a simple picture (generally scores that the game itself saves).

In the case of Metal Slug Anthology the number of credits shown at the bottom right of the screen indicates which difficulty the game is set on: 29 on Easy, 19 on Normal, 9 on Hard. For this you simply need to go to game options and set Continues to Limited.
For the standalone games an additional photo taken when the game starts would at least show the number of lives used.
All in all the best proof is still to know the score limit for said settings, if it's beyond then something's fishy.

To fully understand the problem with the lives setting here's the video of the actual WR:Metal Slug - 3.5m
Skip to 01:01:29 this is the spot where you sacrifice all your lives to increase score. In this case the game is set to the default 3 lives, meaning that after you lost 2 lives you have to progress and clear the game. So playing with 5 lives is the same as playing with 3 lives and using 1 continue.

Also to illustrate the problem with difficulty setting, on the video above skip to 01:31:30 . The pattern you see requires extreme precision to obtain 1000 pts from each enemy, otherwise 100 pts. That means if you lack skill you can compensate by playing on higher difficulty so that enemies have more HP= more points. It's in fact all about the patterns and not the difficulty since increasing difficulty is an easy way to get a high score and the rankings are about score and not difficulty.

Metal Slug games NEVER shows difficult during gameplay. In that case LEVEL-4.
There is another spot where you can get of course extra points but in this one you need to mash button to increase faster score and in that video autofire was used and standalone games doesn't include it.
Consider it as "turbo". Also quality is good and we can't know if emulation was used or not.
"WR" for Metal Slug 2 is emulated and can't be considered as WR.

I can follow Toto64 as I struggled myself with all this when I first joined here.
Apparently you can use any setting, lives, play pinball with 5 balls instead of 3, use glitches or autofire to obtain a score in the same score table as a player that plays a game how I should play it.
I believe people here know by now I am against using glitches, autofire and ignoring the default settings.
I stopped struggling with that and enjoy my own game play (no glitches, no autofire, default settings). And submit my best score. After a while you get to know which players are on par with you.
Remember, this is not TG. I am there too but don't like the fact that aprovers insist that e.g. you have to video tape how you boot the system etc... It's like, yeah.... I will do that every 3 minutes???? As I am not a WR player. Just enjoying my retro stuff.
Hope you do too Toto64 ;)
Cheers
