Yes, I dug up an article to help, because unfortunately, I only have the 3DS version.
"Before the race starts, the player is able to hold B Button to charge up and get a short boost. When the word "Go" appears on screen, the player must swing down the Wii remote to start the event. Doing so with perfect timing grants the player a starting dash."
So, pretty much, its not just pressing and holding B, but you need to swing the remote down at the same time when the event starts. Hope this helps.
